HOT2000 | Overview

HOT2000

HOT2000 is Canada’s leading residential energy analysis and rating software. Developed by CanmetENERGY’s Housing, Buildings, Communities and Simulation (HBCS) group, it has evolved over 23 years to become the Canadian standard for evaluating the energy performance of houses and multi-unit residential buildings.

Since its introduction to the Canadian marketplace in 1987, HOT2000 has been used as:

  • A compliance-checking tool for government programs and the Model National Energy Code for Houses 1997
  • An evaluation tool for the residential building industry
  • A research tool by universities and colleges
  • A learning tool for the energy-aware homeowner

HOT2000 is used by over 25,000 people in 150 countries, and produces more energy evaluations of houses than any other equivalent software tool. Hundreds of houses are run through HOT2000 every day in Canada alone.

Rigorously tested
The HOT2000 software has been put through the rigorous International Energy Agency BESTEST for testing and diagnosing its energy simulation capabilities. It is an integral part of the Office of Energy Efficiency’s (OEE) training program for certified energy evaluators – the only such certification program in Canada.

Nearly 685 thousand homes in Canada have been rated using HOT2000 for the ecoENERGY Retrofit program. The average submission rate for pre-audit evaluations under this program from April 2007 to November 2010 was approximately 15,000 HOT2000 house files per month. At the peak of the program, there were as many as 2400 HOT2000 house submissions per day.

How are HOT2000 and HOT3000 different?

The HOT2000 software was designed to evaluate energy efficiency and is also currently being used for energy certification of houses and other buildings. Based on the HOT2000 program, HOT3000 was developed to help researchers and Canada’s residential construction industry advance the design of energy efficient and net-zero energy homes. HOT3000 builds on HOT2000 success by offering an hourly-based modeling tool which will allow it to better model up-and-coming technologies.
