Carbon Capture & Storage | Feasibility Studies of Oxy-Fuel Technology

CanmetENERGY was one of the first laboratories to develop the basic designs of oxy-fuel combustion systems and to carry out comprehensive technical and economic feasibility studies of these systems. As a result of our leading-edge work on clean coal technology from the mid-1990s to the present, these oxy-fuel technology designs have been accepted within industry and are the basis for current commercial options.

The design and feasibility studies were carried out at CanmetENERGY using proprietary detailed boiler models, including the multi-layered lower-furnace radiation model and the steam/water/flue gas upper-furnace model. These models were built based on the first principles of physics and engineering, using our proven industrial expertise and knowledge. The models have the unique capability to fire in both air and oxy-fuel modes.

CanmetENERGY has conducted feasibility studies of:
  • a high pressure oxy-fuel boiler (2006)
  • a new ambient oxy-fuel boiler design (2004/2005)
  • retrofitting an existing boiler for oxy-fuel operation (2001/2002)
