International Collaboration | Canada-Japan Net Zero Energy Home Project
The Canada-Japan Net Zero initiative is a public-private effort led by CanmetENERGY to support the export of Canadian energy efficient housing technologies and systems to foreign markets. Net Zero is supported by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation both in Japan and in other markets such as China, Korea, Iceland and the United Kingdom. Over 750 Net Zero homes have been built worldwide with over 125 in Japan alone.
The industry consortium of Canadian and Japanese companies have expressed interest in exploring design options for Net Zero houses built in Japan. Canada and Japan share a mutual interest in developing capacity to accelerate practical solutions that will dramatically reduce energy intensity in the housing sector while stimulating renewable energy technology options. One Canadian member, K. Ito and Associates, has been approached by their Japanese partner, Tsuchiya Two-by, to build a Net Zero house.
CanmetENERGY’s role in this project is to facilitate the technical design of the house and provide expert advice on appropriate Canadian technologies to achieve the net-zero targets for the project. A number of leading edge Japanese technologies have also be considered for the project. The project allows the opportunity to demonstrate Canadian and Japanese industry and public sector cooperation while addressing energy issues of mutual concern. Practical solutions to achieving energy efficiency and energy security in the housing sector are also being addressed.
