Fact Sheets

CanmetENERGY has prepared a series of fact sheets that describe the impact of various energy efficiency measures on the energy consumption and GHG emissions of a typical arena (reference arena). The results that show the benefits of these different measures were generated by CanmetENERGY using DOE software models.

Set of fact sheets (PDF, 2.6 MB)

This document comprises all 9 fact sheets intended to arenas stakeholders and more specifically to consultants and managers of arenas.

Overview of the fact sheet

Reference arena (PDF, 356 KB)

This document describes the main features of a typical arena that was used by CanmetENERGY to evaluate the impact of energy efficiency measures applicable to this type of building.

Overview of the fact sheet

Influence of ice rink ceiling type (PDF, 404 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the ceiling of an ice rink. The impact resulting from the implementation of those improvements on energy consumption and GHG emissions of the arena are discussed.

Overview of the fact sheet

Secondary coolant and pumping power relation (PDF, 362 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the refrigeration system, and more specifically to the brine circuit. The impact resulting from the implementation of those improvements on energy consumption and GHG emissions of the arena are presented.

Overview of the fact sheet

Optimizing refrigeration condensing temperature (PDF, 303 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the operation of an ice rink refrigeration system. Benefits of modulating the condensing temperature (floating head) are specifically presented. The impact resulting from the implementation of those improvements on energy consumption and GHG emissions of the arena are presented.

Overview of the fact sheet

Reduction of lighting intensity in the ice rink (PDF, 150 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the lighting level and management in an ice ink. Benefits related to the adjustment of the lighting level according to the type of activity and occupancy rate are presented and the impact of the proposed improvements on energy consumption and GHG emissions are presented.

Overview of fact sheet

Temperature optimization in the stands (PDF, 411 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the management of the temperature in the stands of an ice rink. Benefits of using a radiant floor heating system are presented and the impacts of the proposed improvements on the energy consumption and GHG emissions of the arena are presented.

Overview of the fact sheet

Management of ice temperature (PDF, 368 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the ice temperature management. Benefits of adjusting the ice temperature set point according to the season and type of activity is discussed and the impacts of these improvements on energy consumption and GHG emissions are presented.

Overview of the fact sheet

Using a network of heat pumps (PDF, 343 KB)

This fact sheet proposes improvements to the heat recovery strategies in an arena. Benefits of using a heat pump network to upgrade the heat recovered from the refrigeration system for space and water heating purposes is discussed. Impacts of the proposed improvement on energy consumption and GHG emissions are presented.

Overview of the fact sheet

Optimization of ice and concrete slab thickness (PDF, 419 KB)

This fact sheet presents the benefits of keeping the ice and concrete slab at an optimal thickness. The impacts of this proposed measure on energy consumption and GHG emissions are presented.
